What is a Servo Motor?
One of the biggest improvements in recent years for industrial sewing machines and skiving machines is the servo motor. Quiet, consistent, and more energy-efficient than the standard clutch motor, the servo will have you and your shop employees working faster and happier. Why should you have a servo motor in your sewing and skiving machines?
- They are adjustable. No matter how hard the operator pushes the pedal, it will never go faster than it’s set to.
- They are 25% lighter than standard clutch motors, with less moving parts that can wear out or need adjustment.
- They can run for hours and use as much as 80% less energy than a clutch motor
- Unlike clutch motors, servo motors do not use electricity until the operator touches the foot pedal and engages the motor.
- Reversing the motor rotation is easy with the flick of a switch.
- They are much quieter than a clutch motor and do not vibrate, giving a better quality stitch
- This energy efficiency means they run cooler than a clutch, generating less heat, helping employees stay comfortable and reducing your utility bill.
- When the clutch motor needs to be replaced, you can do so easily with a servo motor
These brushless wonders have quickly become the motor of choice for professionals as well as home sewers when buying new machines or replacing the motor in an older one.
Safety Tips When Working with a Skiving Machine
While a skiving machine can make leatherworking much faster, like any industrial sewing machine, there are certain safety precautions required.
- Learn how the machine works before starting work on leather or other fabrics. Many errors are due to an operator not fully understanding how the machine is supposed to work.
- Visually inspect the machine before using it to ensure that it is in working order before turning it on and engaging the foot pedal.
- Check the height of the pressure foot and adjust if needed for the type of skiving you’re doing.
- Check and adjust the height of the blocking board to the width of the desired skiving width.
- Check the height and adjustment of the feeding wheel prior to operating.
- Always wear eye, ear, and hand protection when operating the skiving machine.
- Aprons and face shields are also a good idea when working with leather to prevent impact injuries.
- Always use the machine with the protective cover over the bell knife. Never operate the machine without it.
- Always keep your work area neat and clean, disposing of scraps properly.
- Wear comfortable but fitting clothes when operating the skiving machine. Loose clothing can get caught and damaged, causing injury.
- Tie up hair that’s longer than shoulder length to prevent catching in the machine.
- Use a brush to clean the machine at the end of the day, and remove any stuck pieces with a stick or a brush.
- If the blade on the bell knife seems dull, it may be time for a sharpening.
With equipment like this, it’s important to continue to use proper safety measures and care to ensure safe and efficient operation, every day.

Caring for Your Shears and Scissors
The first thing you should NEVER do is cut anything but fabric with your scissors and shears intended for fabrics. The second is to never cut into a pin or needle since it will damage them permanently. When you’re finished using your shears, the best thing you can do is wipe the blades with a dry cloth to remove lint, threads, dust, and other small particles that can make them harder to use. Synthetic fibers can also dull the blades. Clean away the dry particles after every use. Keep your shears and scissors working smoothly with a small drop of quality sewing machine oil in the fulcrum or the pivot screw. Carefully open and close them a few times (point down) to distribute the oil, and wipe them, spreading some of the remnant oil over the blades. You want to oil your scissors and shears about once a month, more if you use them daily. Of course, be careful not to drop them, or they could be damaged to the point of being unworkable.
When they just don’t cut like they used to, sharpening is a must to prevent damage to your fabrics. You may have heard that cutting through aluminum foil steel wool and/or sandpaper as a way to quickly sharpen your dulled scissors. Despite their popularity, we don’t recommend these methods. Think about it—if you shouldn’t use your sewing shears and scissors for paper and other things, or attempt to cut through a pin or needle, why would you use either of these to sharpen a blade? There are better ways to sharpen your shears at home or in your commercial shop. Need something small and efficient to keep around?
